Although Charles, 74, took the throne in September 2022 following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, he will be formally crowned in a highly publicized ceremony in May.

Most of the relics have been part of the royal tradition since the beginning of history and have a rich history. The oldest item in the collection is the coronation spoon, first presented at royal ceremonies in the 12th century. During the ceremony, the spoon contains holy oil, which is used to anoint the monarch, as was done for each king or queen at their respective coronations.
While the spoon is used specifically for coronations, some other items are also used for other important occasions for the royal family. When Queen Elizabeth died, the Sovereign’s Orb and the Sovereign’s Scepter with the Cross were placed on her coffin. The ball is presented to the monarch at their coronation, a tradition that began with the ceremony of Charles II in 1661. The golden ball is decorated with a cross on top, which symbolizes his heavenly power over the world. The sphere contains several small emeralds, rubies, sapphires, diamonds, pearls and one large amethyst.
