A grandmother has been charged with the murder of her five-year-old grandson after he was stabbed to death while in her care.

Dario-Mario Lazar, known as Mario to his family and friends, was found with serious injuries at a property in Earlsden, Coventry, last January.

Despite the efforts of the emergency services, he was confirmed dead at the scene and a post-mortem revealed that he had died of stab wounds.

Mario’s grandmother, Elena Engel, 50, was looking after him at the time and was initially arrested on suspicion of murder and later charged under the Mental Health Act.

It was confirmed that she appeared at the Leamington Justice Center today ahead of a planned trial in June.

Engel remains in a secure mental health facility and is next scheduled to appear in court on March 6.

Friends said she regularly babysat after school while her parents worked.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: ‘A woman has been charged with murder after she looked after a five-year-old boy in Coventry last January.

‘Elena Engel, 50, from Coventry, appeared at Leamington Justice Center today and remains in a secure mental health facility pending her trial in June.

‘David-Mario Lazar died of a stab wound on 25 January 2022 at his home in Poplar Road, Earlsdon.

‘His family has been informed of this latest development and our thoughts are with them.’

Last year, his devastated parents Christina and Dorinell paid tribute to their son in a statement released by West Midlands Police.

They said: ‘Our son, he was the most beautiful child in the world.

‘He was a very happy boy. He was always smiling from the time he got up till he went to sleep.

‘He had so much energy. He loved to dance and sing. He belongs to all our hearts, all our love and everything to both of us.
