Commuters traveling on the London Underground partially undressed today in celebration of The No Trouser Tube Ride, which returned to the capital for the first time since the pandemic in March 2020.

Hundreds of Sunday commuters joined in the no trouser fun, which first started on the other side of the Atlantic in New York 20 years ago.

The Elizabeth Line, which opened last year, welcomed its first trouser-free passengers, with hundreds traveling in their underwear for the annual event that began in New York two decades ago.

Organized by The Stiff Upper Lip Society, the event saw people wearing smart office wear on their top halves with just underwear, shoes and socks on the lower half of their bodies.

The event is part of the worldwide No Pants Subway Ride, which began in New York in 2002 and has since spread to more than 60 cities around the world.

The bizarre tradition was created in New York City in 2002 by the comedy performance art group Improv Everywhere.

Improv Everywhere’s website says, ‘Mission began as a small prank with seven people and has grown into an international celebration of silliness, with dozens of cities around the world participating each year.’

Photos taken during the flashy event showed people casually riding subway trains and casually taking off their pants.

The group says, ‘As soon as the doors close at the stop in front of you, stand up and take off your pants and put them in your bag.’

‘If someone asks you why you took off your pants, tell them they were ‘being uncomfortable’ (or something similar.’
