Notes come in from in and out of Chicago.

wild of the week

Ed Potocki Photographed this scene at Shabbona Lake during thick snow. “Saw this frozen oyster just in time. until I realized it was just a log. , , I did a double take when I saw it. Only in Musk Hunters!!

OK, it’s a different WOTW, but I like it.

WOTW, a celebration of wild stories and photos outside Chicago, runs most weeks in the Sun-Times Sports Saturday, a two-page special outdoors section. To submit, email bowmanoutside@gmail.com or contact me on facebookDale Bowman), Twitter (@bowmanoutside) or Instagram (@bowmanoutside,

“Any word on DuSable?” Matt

a: I rarely get fishing reports from DuSable Harbor unless I am physically there. The regulars are extremely tight and small anglers are hard to reach other than in parking lots or if you live literally in town.

last word

“I’ll run wire through the concrete block and each tree limb and wrap it several times. Then I’ll slide the block off the dock and into a boat stall and watch the tree slowly sink. Instant wrap. Instant fishing. Location. I’m amazed at how quickly Christmas trees proudly carrying a Christmas tradition can attract crappies.

File photo of a Christmas tree on snow that melts as the Christmas tree sinks on a south suburban lake and becomes a cover for fish.
