The elderly woman who took Harry’s virginity to a field at the age of 17 is believed to have been a vet at a horse stud, the Mail can reveal on Sunday.

In his memoir Spare, the prince revealed that according to locals, his lover ‘treated me no unlike a young stallion’ behind the busy pub of the 17th-century Rattlebone Inn in Wiltshire.

Frank Ortet, a former manager of the pub, told the MoS last night he believed the mystery woman was an attractive member of the local polo set, who enjoyed rowdy nights at the pub with both Harry and Prince William when she was in her mid-teens. I was in 20s.

The woman began visiting Rattlebone in the pretty village of Sherston in April 2000 with two princes and a group of players from the nearby Beaufort Polo Club.

About ten years older than Harry, she is now an equine vet at a successful stud and looks after several stallions – perhaps fittingly.

Mr Ortet, 48, described the woman as ‘extremely confident’ and the ‘leader’ of a group of friends Harry socialized with in his late teens at a pub near his father’s Highgrove estate in Gloucestershire.

‘She was almost always there when Harry and William were there,’ he said. Often she sat between the two of them or next to Harry. When he was saying something that was nonsensical, she would shoo him away by saying “Oh shut up, Harry”. Often he used to laugh a lot, which made me think that he was the same person. She was also very bubbly.

‘She was lovely and she was always very close to him. Whenever she was in the pub, she used to shadow him. In my personal opinion, she would be the right candidate. He is not super famous but he is not commoner either.

‘Everyone was seeking her approval – she was the kind of person you want to make laugh. All the boys were crazy about him.

The MoS knocked on the door of the woman’s house yesterday but a man who answered the door, said to be her husband, said she would not comment.

Leaked copies of Spare in Spain raised eyebrows last week with Harry’s apparently lewd language. A translated copy of the book states, ‘I quickly mounted him, after which he stroked my ass and sent me away.’

But the MoS is the first to see an English version of the book in which it is clear that the prince was using a light-hearted metaphor. Comparing the encounter to ‘not unlike a young stallion’, he said: ‘Quick ride, after which he whacked my tail and sent me out to graze.’

The back door of the pub is just two steps from the ‘meadow’ where Harry had his first sexual encounter with an older woman.

The small paddock – now known as Baker Thompson Field – has been taken over by the Village Hall and is now used for weddings and other public events.

But Sherston village residents recall that it used to be a regular haunt for couples lounging behind pubs.

The MoS first revealed in 2002 how William and Harry enjoyed a raucous ‘lock-in’ at Rattlebone with their friends.

The group would hold their drinking sessions in the pub’s so-called ‘magic room’ – a bar away from the front windows.

During one particularly drunken night, Mr Ortet, who was originally from Biarritz in France but is now living in Shropshire, had given the princes and their friends an extravagant 36 bottles of snakebite lager and cider to drink after hours. Raised the pints.

“We were doing this game where we had to drink three or four pints in under a minute … When you’re in your 20s, you do silly things like that,” Mr. Ortet said.

Current landlord Jason Reid, 54, who took over the pub 17 years ago, said: 'I know Prince Harry drank here, but this is the first I've heard of him losing his virginity in the grounds behind .

However, the party turned sour one night in the spring of 2001 when a drunken Harry repeatedly hurled a racial insult at Mr Ortet, who barred Harry from the pub and has not seen him since.

He said he believed a field behind Rattlebone, surrounded by a stone wall, would have been ‘the perfect location’ for Harry’s brief liaison. But others are not so convinced.

After Harry is stopped, he and his friends go drinking at The Vine Tree in nearby Norton. But the popular pub has a large window in the middle of a field, meaning revelers can see any debauchery outside.

Another contender named by locals is The Cat and Custard Pot in Shipton Moyne, which also has a large grounds behind the car park.

Some who know Harry through polo are dismayed by his recent behaviour.

‘He’s lost his mind – it’s slipped about three feet,’ said Beryl Clampton, 82, who lives in Sherston. ‘He will come to his senses one day.’

Meanwhile, a female pensioner who has lived in the village for 47 years told MailOnline: ‘It was no surprise to anyone living here at the time that Harry started causing mischief on the farm.

‘She and William used the pub as their local – Harry was a man doing what young men do.’

The 72-year-old woman, who did not want to be named, claimed to know the identity of the older woman who treated the teenage prince, according to her memoir Spare.

He said: ‘There were rumors in the village at the time, she was not from the village itself, but worked at the stables far away. As far as I know, she doesn’t live here anymore.

‘The pub was very different in those days and there were rumors that he used drugs when he was here.’

The woman said the Cotswolds village was not particularly proud of its association with the errant prince and would not put up a blue plaque to mark Harry’s first sexual encounter.

The back door of the Rattlebone Inn faces an ivy-clad entrance to the grounds that is blocked these days by a black iron gate.

But when Harry and Prince William used the pub while living with their father at Highgrove House, seven miles away, there was no gate.

Villagers surmised that Harry, slipping in with one of the local girls through the back door of the pub, would not have been the only drinker.

Current landlord Jason Reid, 54, who took over the pub 17 years ago, said: ‘I know Prince Harry drank here, but this is the first time I’ve heard of him losing his virginity in the grounds.

‘There is a popular legend about the brothers coming here but that was before my time. Although it can be good for business.

The grounds run alongside Sherston Village Hall where a yoga class was in full swing today. The grassy area now belongs to the village and is named after the local charity that funded its purchase 12 years ago.
