William and Harry are said to be devastated by Henry’s death after his car crashed into a tree outside Ludgrove Prep School, killing him instantly.

After Henry’s death, his family founded The Henry Van Straubenzee Memorial Fund, of which Thomas is a patron.

The charity works to fight poverty in Uganda through education, and both William and Harry are patrons.

Their friendship with the princes made headlines in 2011, when she was abducted at knifepoint in Battersea while on the phone with Harry, and a concerned prince drove across the city to investigate her.

In 2013, Thomas married Lady Melissa Percy, daughter of the Duke of Northumberland, at his family’s ancestral home, Alnwick Castle, which doubles as Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films. Princes William and Harry were among the guests.

The couple divorced after three years in 2016, citing Thomas’ ‘inappropriate behaviour’ as the reason for the breakdown.

He remarried in 2020, tying the knot with Lucy Lanigan-O’Keeffe, a teacher at Battersea School, attended by Prince George and Princess Charlotte, and they share a young son, Albert.

Meanwhile James Meade, whom Harry claimed was the other ‘real’ best man at Prince William’s wedding, accompanied the older royal to Eton.

He is the son of Olympic gold medalist equestrian Richard Meade.

James is also close to the Princess of Wales, accompanying her to the Badminton Horse Trials following her brief split from William in May 2007.

Known as ‘Meady’ among his friends, he once took part in a charity boxing match at the Boodles Boxing Ball in 2008 – seen by William and Kate under the nickname ‘The Badger’.

He and his wife, Lady Laura Marsham, daughter of the 8th Earl of Romney, are both godparents to Princess Charlotte.
